What does it mean to heal?

What is healing? Does healing mean being cured or the absence of disease? Does it mean to be a percentage point better than yesterday?

Rest + Self Care = Recovery

I hate being in a flare. This is day #3. Waking up with a headache and as the morning progressed every joint hurts. I will spend my afternoon in bed just so I can get up and make dinner. Autoimmune disease is tough and I’m lucky that this doesn’t happen all of the time. I remember when I would have migraines and joint pain 5 to 7 days out of the week. I didn’t have time to be mad at the situation because I was trying to care for two small children. I was more depressed than anything. Now I get mad when I’m forced to rest but I try to do something constructive. Sleep, pray, meditate, read or watch a funny movie. Laughter truly is the best medicine. Flare days are rough but rest = recovery.

Why Not You?

I do my best thinking in the shower or in bed. 🤔 I recalled a conversation with an acquaintance. She was interested in losing weight and changing her lifestyle habits. She wanted to eat better but wasn’t sure if she could stick with an eating plan long-term. As we discussed this she said, “I buy organic dog food for my dog but I don’t eat organic and buy junk food for myself. I know I should eat better.” So I asked, “Why not you? Why do you put your dog first? Why don’t you think you deserve to eat the good food but the dog does?”  In my 30 day challenge we will re-define your relationship with food. Are you going to take care of your health? If not, why not? Why not you?

Everyday is about Autism in our Household

Do you have a family member or know someone who has autism? April is autism awareness month. There was a time when autism was a rare occurrence and we needed a month to bring it to people’s attention. I don’t think we need an autism awareness month anymore. People are aware of the prevalence of autism. What we need is a “give a parent of a person with autism a break sometime” month. A month where you call a parent/caregiver and watch that child/adult with autism for a couple of hours so that the care giver can get out and do something for themselves. Just a thought.

Making Good Choices

You may have seen the viral video of Katelyn Ohashi’s recent floor routine where she received a perfect score. A few years ago, she almost quit gymnastics due to injuries and her lack of enthusiasm for the sport. She decided to drop down from the elite level to heal and have a shot at a collegiate career. Her decision paid off. Katelyn found Miss Val, coach of the UCLA women’s gymnastics team who rekindled her joy and love for the sport.

Accepting the Finality of Loss

I’ve experienced two types of loss this past week that had me thinking about life in general. A friend lost a parent and my daughter lost a tooth. The chasm between those types of loss is vast but to a person with autism they are the same. I think of what a mess I’ll be when I lose my parents. A morbid thought I know. If my mother knew I was writing about this she would be upset. “How could you think about such things?” I could hear her saying, whereas my father has brought up retirement, life insurance, the importance of having a will or living trust. He’s always thinking ahead and prepared for anything that could happen. This is the difference between my Italian side and my Polish side.

Taking that Leap

Stepping out of your comfort zone is daring, nerve-racking, and refreshing. I did just that when I sang for Dancing with the QC Stars a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t sung for an audience in over 20 years. I only thought about that when I was asked about it. It felt as if I’d never stepped away from it!

World Prematurity Day

Today is World Prematurity Day. My mom was 8 months along and went for her exam and when she was ready to leave the doctor said, “See you in a month!” He told her later after I was born that he knew he would be seeing her the next day, but didn’t want her to be nervous. So I was born one month early at Prentice Women’s Hospital in downtown Chicago.
